| 1. | Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Category II Codes: Pay-for-Performance Measures (2009) American Academy of Pediatrics Pay-for-performance programs incentivize clinicians, using evidence-based medicine to provide preventive services that should improve clinical outcomes and enhance patient safety and satisfaction. Pay-for-performance programs reward clinicians based on performance of quality and efficiency measures so that desired patient management practices occur through changed physician behavior. CPT contains a set of Category II tracking codes that can be used to report performance measurement. This brochure reflects the use of these codes and how they relate to pay for performance.  | 2. | AAP making impact on UnitedHealthcare pay-for-performance programs (2009) Norman Chip Harbaugh Jr., M.D., FAAP As a result of discussions with the Academy, UnitedHealthcare has changed its Premium physician designation program to benefit pediatricians. Premium designation is a performance measurement program that serves as input into UnitedHealthcare's pay-for-performance system in areas where the company has implemented the system. Most payers have implemented pay-for-performance programs, a model that attempts to align financial incentives with outcomes and value. UnitedHealthcare, however, is the first carrier to engage the Academy in reviewing its quality measurements, program guidelines, transparency and appeals process.
