AAP making impact on UnitedHealthcare pay-for-performance programs

As a result of discussions with the Academy, UnitedHealthcare has changed its Premium physician designation program to benefit pediatricians. Premium designation is a performance measurement program that serves as input into UnitedHealthcare's pay-for-performance system in areas where the company has implemented the system. Most payers have implemented pay-for-performance programs, a model that attempts to align financial incentives with outcomes and value. UnitedHealthcare, however, is the first carrier to engage the Academy in reviewing its quality measurements, program guidelines, transparency and appeals process. This article provides an overview of the impact of discussions.
